As we slither into the Year of the Snake, it’s a wonderful time to introduce the magic of kids yoga to your little ones. The snake symbolizes transformation, wisdom, and renewal—qualities that are beautifully aligned with the practice of yoga.
- Transformation: Just as a snake sheds its skin to grow and renew itself, yoga fosters personal transformation helping individuals to shed old habits and embrace positive change.
- Wisdom: The snake symbolizes deep wisdom and intuition. Yoga cultivates this inner wisdom through mindful movements, meditation, and self-awareness, helping individuals connect with their inner selves.
- Renewal: The snake's ability to regenerate and renew itself aligns with yoga's emphasis on rejuvenation. Through regular practice, yoga revitalizes the mind and body, promoting a sense of renewal and overall well-being.
Here are some snake-inspired yoga poses to try with your children:
- Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana): Encourage your child to lie on their stomach and lift their chest off the ground, just like a cobra rising up. This pose strengthens the back and opens the chest, promoting good posture.
- Snake Slither: Have your child lie on their stomach and move side to side, pretending to slither like a snake. This fun movement can improve coordination and engage core muscles.
In yoga, the snake represents Kundalini energy, a powerful force of inner transformation. For kids, this can be translated into playful yoga poses that mimic the snake's graceful movements while instilling a sense of calm and focus.
Embracing the symbolic attributes of the snake can enhance one's yoga practice, leading to a journey of continuous self-discovery and renewal. We’ll show you how. Attend our special family event for Lunar New Year on January 26 or send the kids to LNY Camp on January 29.

A lot of people misunderstand what yoga is really about. It doesn’t just create a stronger, more flexible, and balanced body. It can also transform your mental focus and your capacity to show up for yourself and others with heart. Especially your kids.
Many people think that yoga is an answer for anxiety and depression. And it is. This practice follows us into all aspects of our lives, personally and professionally, so we consciously wire our nervous system to feel confident and secure.
Did you know that 1 in 6 children struggle with anxiety and depression? (Source: CDC) It's crucial to recognize the signs and offer the right support.
Here are eight signs that your child may be stuck in anxiety or depression: persistent sadness, irritability, withdrawal, changes in sleep, changes in appetite, fatigue, physical complaints, and difficulty concentrating.
These signs can also be part of typical childhood development. How do we know when it’s a real problem and how do we help solve it?
Enter Zen Parenting and Kids Yoga. These practices can help break free from the anxious-depression cycle and equip your child with the skills they need to succeed. Yoga is more than a physical exercise; it's a holistic approach that can create a calm and secure connection with your child. When children engage in yoga, they learn to trust their voice, manage their emotions, and find balance in their lives.
Zen Parenting teaches that we cannot simply will-power our way into changing behaviors. Instead, we need to find peace and ease within our nervous system. By integrating yoga and mindful practices, we can help children rewire the pathways that keep them stuck in cycles of anxiety and depression, ultimately leading to happier, more connected relationships.
If you're ready to explore these transformative practices and experience the peace and connection you've been longing for with your child, consider attending a Zen Parenting workshop. Together, let's create a nurturing environment where children can thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Take the Zen Parenting Workshop at Metta Yoga on Sunday, January 26, from 1:30-3:30pm. I’ll show you how.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." This profound statement teaches us that peace is both the path and the destination. For our children, yoga offers a perfect way to embody this wisdom and integrate peace into their daily lives.
The Journey Begins
In kids yoga, the journey towards peace starts with simple, mindful practices. By focusing on breathing and gentle movements, children learn to calm their minds and bodies. These peaceful moments aren't just about reaching a state of calm; they're about experiencing peace in each step of the practice.
Building Blocks of Peace
Through poses like the peaceful tree or the calm butterfly, children connect with their inner selves and the world around them. Yoga teaches them to be present, to listen, and to understand that peace comes from within. It's not just a goal to be achieved in the future, but a way of being that they can nurture every day.
Intentions and Actions
Setting intentions during yoga practice helps children understand that their actions matter. Whether it's a promise to be kind, to share, or to be patient, these intentions guide them towards peaceful interactions with others. Each yoga session becomes a lesson in living peacefully and making mindful choices.
A Community of Peace
Practicing yoga with others helps children see the power of community in creating peace. They learn to support and respect their peers, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued. This sense of community mirrors Dr. King's vision of a world where peace is shared and nurtured collectively.
The Ongoing Journey
As children continue their yoga practice, they carry the lessons of peace with them off the mat. They begin to realize that peace is not just the end goal but the way they live each day. By embracing yoga, our children can embody Dr. King's message and contribute to a more peaceful world, one mindful breath at a time.
So, as we celebrate MLK Day, let's encourage our kids to find peace through yoga. Let's help them understand that peace is both the journey and the destination, a beautiful way to live and grow.
P.S. Come to our special family event on January 19 or MLK Day camp on January 20.

The New Year is an excellent time for setting new intentions and S.M.A.R.T. goals for ourselves — and our children. Kids yoga offers a wonderful way for children to engage in mindfulness, build physical strength, and develop a sense of calm and focus that can benefit them throughout their lives.
Yoga is an inclusive practice that benefits adults and children in numerous ways:
- Physical Health: Improves flexibility, strength, balance and coordination.
- Mental Well-being: Promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety, and enhances focus.
- Emotional Balance: Teaches kids how to manage their emotions and encourages a positive self-image.
Incorporating yoga into your child's routine can be an excellent way to introduce the concept of setting intentions and goals. Here are a few steps to get started:
- Make it Fun (or they won’t come): Use engaging and playful poses that captivate their interest, like the butterfly pose or tree pose.
- Mindfulness Moments: Start with simple breathing exercises to help them focus and calm their minds.
- Set Personal Intentions: Encourage your child to set a personal intention for their yoga practice. It could be something as simple as being kind, trying their best, or practicing patience.
- Goal-Setting: Help them set achievable goals, like mastering a new pose or practicing yoga regularly. Celebrate their milestones to keep them motivated.
- Family Practice: Yoga can be a bonding activity for the whole family. Practicing together can reinforce the importance of intentions and goals.
As your child embarks on their yoga journey, remind them that the focus is on progress, not perfection. Encourage them to listen to their bodies and enjoy the process. Yoga is a lifelong practice that will evolve with them, providing tools for mindfulness, resilience, and well-being.
By integrating kids yoga and setting positive intentions, we can help our children build a strong foundation for a balanced and fulfilling New Year. Here’s to a year filled with mindful moments, joyful practices, and achieving new goals together!
Happy New Year and Namaste! ✨ Set SMART goals at our family event on January 12 at Metta Yoga.
